چکیده

This paper presents the development of inspection strategies dedicated to the quality insurance of the wind turbine blade manufacturing process and in particular the inspection of the adhesive bondlines. Ultrasonic testing is recognized as a technique that can provide valuable information about the structure. Porosity, dry area and delamination can be detected and characterized in laminates. Lack of adhesive can be detected and bond line width and thickness can be measured. However, standard equipment and procedure for ultrasonic testing used in aerospace or nuclear industry are not adapted to the specificity of blade inspection. This paper presents an innovative approach to ultrasonic testing of wind turbine blades that combines specially developed hardware (the WINDBLAST inspection system with hand-held scanner and conformable arrays) , signal processing and evaluation tools dedicated to quality control of large and complex GFRP structures.

Ultrasonic NDT of wind turbine blades using contact pulse-echo immersion testing with moving water container

Wind turbine blades are complicated objects for inspection because they have a curved surface, are multi-layered, have variable thickness and are made from anisotropic materials. Ultrasonic contact pulse-echo immersion testing with moving water container has been selected for inspection of wind turbine blades, because this type of the inspection can be performed having access just from the one ...

Ultrasonic NDT of wind turbine blades using guided waves

In order fully to exploit energy of wind power the construction elements of the wind turbine should be inspected periodically. Ultrasonic air-coupled technique using guided waves has been selected for inspection of wind turbine blades, because only one side access is enough and no contact is needed. Dispersion curves of phase velocities as well as leakage losses versus frequency were calculated...

Damage tolerance and structural monitoring for wind turbine blades.

The paper proposes a methodology for reliable design and maintenance of wind turbine rotor blades using a condition monitoring approach and a damage tolerance index coupling the material and structure. By improving the understanding of material properties that control damage propagation it will be possible to combine damage tolerant structural design, monitoring systems, inspection techniques a...

A Comparative Study of Simulation and Experiment Results for Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing for the Root Area of Low-Pressure Turbine

Non-destructive testing of the root area of a low-pressure (LP) turbine's blades and disks was performed in a restrictive manner. When the turbine blades and disks were disassembled or not, the root area surface was examined by conventional ultrasonic testing (UT), that is, magnetic particle or liquid penetrant testing. Recent developments have led to the use of phased array ultrasonic testing ...

Single Crystal Turbine Blade Inspection Using a 2d Ultrasonic Array

In this paper a non-destructive method for inspecting jet-engine turbine blades for root cracking is developed. This method utilises 2D ultrasonic arrays to enable the detection and characterisation of sub-surface cracks in three-dimensions. The majority of modern turbine blades are manufactured from single crystals of nickel based superalloys which exhibit high elastic anisotropy. This complic...
